HUGO FERNANDEZ QUARTETTModern Jazz, Pop, Soul... Hugo Fernandez (g, comp.), Tarek Yamani (p), Giacomo Tagliavia (b), Ugo Alunni (dr) www.hugofernandez.net[Info +/-]
His new quartet project promises not less than an exciting experience. The piano is by excellence the most complete harmonic instrument and together with the guitar, can create intricate melodies and harmonies that can complement each other in a compelling dance. Stylistically, the music of this quartet can be identified under the “modern jazz” umbrella, a sound that mixes elements of jazz with classical, pop and folk music. Hugo Fernandez teams up with Lebanese pianist Tarek Yamani, who ingeniously stretches the edges of middle eastern music and the rhythms and harmonies of Black American Music. Bassist Giacomo Tagliavia is an alumnus of the Global Jazz Institute at Berklee and his playing is influenced from both, his homeland Sicily and traditional and modern European jazz. Ugo Alunni from Perugia, is a well suited all around drummer that can be heard playing from mainstream jazz to adventurous modern jazz.

"A sound like an orchestra" (All About Jazz), "Echoes of classical music" (Crescendo), "Great soloists, brilliant stylistics" (FR), the press praises the new album "Essays on Jazz" by the Maria Baptist Quintet and immediately nominates it for the German Record Critics' Award. For the recordings, the pianist and composer brought together her trio with Fabian Timm (bass) and Heinz Lichius (drums), her duo partner Jan von Klewitz (alto saxophone) and her orchestra musician Richard Maegraith (tenor saxophone, bass clarinet). Inspired by the sound of the John Coltrane Quartet and the polyphony of Gil Evans, "Essays on Jazz" finds itself in the field of chamber jazz and classical modernism. The music reveals itself to be very rich in contrasts: balladic chamber music, straight-ahead jazz to symphonic transitions. Maria Baptist is a border crosser between musical worlds. Her music fuses jazz and classical music to create a new sound experience. Maria Baptist composes equally for jazz and symphonic ensembles, writes for jazz ensembles as well as for string quintets. As a solo pianist, she improvises as naturally as she conducts a big band. The press compares her to the great jazz pianists: "Maria Baptist's rhapsodic, free-flowing piano style is reminiscent of Bill Evans & Keith Jarrett." (Downbeat)

The Toughest Tenors. This band will blow you away. The Toughest Tenors can only smile wearily at the wannabe hip-hop thugs who engage in angry rhyming duels. The five heavy jazz guys, steeled and trained in the club venues of Berlin and New York, don't hesitate for long. They show what the "hard" in "hard bop" means, how much muscle mass the blues has, and make it clear where the so-called "battles" of rap really come from. The spirit of the noble competition cultivated by the brilliant tenor saxophonists of the 50s and 60s, legends like Dexter Gordon and Wardell Gray, Johnny Griffin and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis. The Toughest Tenors have set themselves the task of reviving the long tradition of "saxophone battles". With original arrangements, but without false nostalgia. Up-to-date, but without trend doping. With concentrated energy, unbridled joy of playing, quick-witted humour. And with the heart of a boxer. Live, the quintet led by the two independent tenor character heads Bernd Suchland and Patrick Braun has already triumphantly won countless battles for the audience's favour. Now the Toughest Tenors are launching the big eavesdropping attack with their debut CD "What's Happening?". A fair affair. Full on the twelve. And right into the soul

Flamenco and jazz are brothers in spirit. They are rooted in ethnic traditions that convey intense emotions. Flamenco was born in Andalusia, a melting pot of Eastern and Western influences. Flamenco reflects intense feelings, while jazz, with its roots in South American and African heritage, also captures strong emotions. Berlin played an important role in the development of flamenco jazz, with a significant moment at the Berlin Jazz Festival in 1967, where Pedro Iturralde introduced fusion and brought along a 19-year-old flamenco prodigy named Paco de LucĂa, who later became an international flamenco sensation and cultivated an enduring connection to jazz until his death in February 2014. Our mission is to shine a light on Berlin's vibrant flamenco-jazz community and provide a platform for professionals and enthusiasts alike to network, collaborate and share their passion for this unique musical fusion. Join us in celebrating this harmonious blend of two musical worlds where creativity knows no bounds.

HARLEM BEATS is a lively homage to the musical renaissance of Harlem. In this sonic adventure, the arrangements boldly challenge the conventions of traditional jazz and creatively fuse electronic elements. The production approach reflects the experimental vision of artist Lucia Fodde, who takes the classic repertoire of two great exponents of the movement, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, as a starting point to renew and innovate some of their famous compositions. The aim is to capture the soul of this glorious era through the reimagining of six iconic tracks, offering a modern and sophisticated perspective that transforms the classic heritage in a surprising way.

Tonight's music will focus on the energetic, but also the lyrical side of the great trumpeter, commemorating one of the most important, uncompromising and original innovators of jazz with great energy and dedication.
